چکیده
Cathode-associated microbial communities (caMCs) are the functional key elements in conversion of excess electrical energy into biomass. In this study, we investigated development electrochemical caMCs based on two-chamber electrolytic cells (MECs) after optimization media composition. Microbial obtained from a historical soil sample were inoculated cathode chamber MECs. The inorganic medium with (A) carbon dioxide air or (B) 100 mM sodium bicarbonate as source was used absence any organic source. After 12 days operation, experimental results showed that (1) bacterial community group B exhibited lush growth and (2) single strain TX168 Epilithonimonas bovis isolated A indicated activity synthesized large volumes biomass using bicarbonate. We also analyzed MECs reference samples without electro-cultivation 16S rRNA gene sequencing. groups dominated by genera Acinetobacter Pseudomonas. further cultured different agars to isolate specific electroactive strains. Overall, our study highlights possibility converting importance selecting appropriate enrich strains

Using cathode spacers to minimize reactor size in air cathode microbial fuel cells.
Scaling up microbial fuel cells (MFCs) will require more compact reactor designs. Spacers can be used to minimize the reactor size without adversely affecting performance. A single 1.5mm expanded plastic spacer (S1.5) produced a maximum power density (973±26mWm(-2)) that was similar to that of an MFC with the cathode exposed directly to air (no spacer). However, a very thin spacer (1.3mm) reduc...
متن کاملA Single-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell without an Air Cathode
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a novel technology for wastewater treatment with electricity production. Electricity generation with simultaneous nitrate reduction in a single-chamber MFC without air cathode was studied, using glucose (1 mM) as the carbon source and nitrate (1 mM) as the final electron acceptor employed by Bacillus subtilis under anaerobic conditions. Increasing current a...
متن کاملMicrobial fuel cell performance with a pressurized cathode chamber.
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) power densities are often constrained by the oxygen reduction reaction rate on the cathode electrode. One important factor for this is the normally low solubility of oxygen in the aqueous cathode solution, which creates mass transport limitation and hinders oxygen reduction at the electrocatalyst (platinum, Pt). Here, we increased the air pressure in the cathode chambe...
متن کاملDynamics of cathode-associated microbial communities and metabolite profiles in a glycerol-fed bioelectrochemical system.
Electrical current can be used to supply reducing power to microbial metabolism. This phenomenon is typically studied in pure cultures with added redox mediators to transfer charge. Here, we investigate the development of a current-fed mixed microbial community fermenting glycerol at the cathode of a bioelectrochemical system in the absence of added mediators and identify correlations between m...
متن کاملNano Copper Oxide-Modified Carbon Cloth as Cathode for a Two-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell
In this work, Cu₂O nanoparticles were deposited on a carbon cloth cathode using a facile electrochemical method. The morphology of the modified cathode, which was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) tests, showed that the porosity and specific surface area of the cathode improved with longer deposition times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS...
